Louis Vuitton Debuts Nicolas Ghesquiere's First Bags For The Brand

Louis Vuitton is the biggest luxury handbag brand in the world, and there’s no job that counts more in the accessories industry than that of Louis Vuitton’s creative director. For most of my life, that was Marc Jacobs, comfortably ensconced atop the French powerhouse that he reinvigorated with his signature blend of luxury and pop-cultural wit. After the Spring 2014 show, though, Jacobs passed the reigns to Nicolas Ghesquiere, formerly of Balenciaga, and he debuted Louis Vuitton Fall 2014 in Paris on Wednesday.

Perhaps the most striking thing about the bags, and the collection as a whole, is that they’re very clearly not Marc Jacobs. The man and the brand have been so closely tied for so long that it feels genuinely foreign to look at LV through another designer’s eyes. Ghesquiere is more than capable, though; the show’s Mini Trunk bags are my favorite runway piece from Vuitton in recent memory, and the collection as a whole was crisply retro-modern.
