Introducing Loewe Weave, Restore, Renew

With so many options when it comes to handbags, it can be hard for a luxury house to diversify itself from the crowd. But when it comes to Loewe, few brands boast the same attention to artisanal craft as the Spanish leather goods company. It’s that heritage and focus on the details which shine in the latest project from Jonathan Anderson and Loewe.

Weave, Restore, Renew

This year, Loewe will celebrate its sixth appearance at Milan’s Salone del Mobile, the Milan Furniture Fair, for those who don’t speak Italian. The project celebrates the art of woven craft and how craftspeople breathe new life into objects that may otherwise feel old and unusable. With Weave, Restore, Renew invention is championed, and this project calls upon Spanish artisans to restore and reinvigorate antique woven baskets from around the world.

To coincide with the project, Loewe launches a collection of bags that use natural materials and traditional techniques from across the globe. Baskets crafted from straw, raffia, or wicker are repaired and reimagined with leather, meant to perfectly intertwine past and present. Loewe’s 2019 Craft Prize Finalist, Young Soon Lee, collaborated with Jonathan Anderson on this collection to present a series of bucket bags using a Korean technique called jitseung. This intricate process includes rubbing, tying, and weaving paper strips.

The process can be seen in action on a series of Loewe bucket bags from the collection. As for the stunning fringed bags? They were inspired by the craft of Coroza, which is an ancient Galician weaving technique. These raffia bags were created in partnership with Galician artisan Álvaro Leiro using natural materials to help create the historical technique.
